BLOOMINGTON – The parents of a Bloomington man killed in a drunk driving accident in 2014 had a chance to share their son’s story this week with Chicago Bears rookies.
Michael Collins’ mother, Kelly Collins, said they were connected to the Bears through a collaborative program between Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the National Football League. Besides telling her son’s story, Kelly Collins spoke to the players about making responsible decisions.
“I told them that the most important battle that they’re going to fight is not on the football field, but within themselves,” said Kelly Collins. “Within their mind and their heart to make the right choice.”
Michael Collins was 22-years-old when the car he was riding in was struck by a drunk driver in March 2014 in Bloomington. He died less than a week later.
“To be honest, I just told them if they could take away one thing it was that, even when all of the precautions are taken, drinking and driving can affect anyone at anytime,” Kelly Collins said.
Since their son’s death, the Collins started The Michael Collins Foundation. More about the organization can be read here.
