BLOOMINGTON – The McLean County Museum of History’s annual History Makers Gale Thursday night did more than just honor this year’s four history makers.
The museum also announced it was able to raise $3.36 million through its Extending Excellence campaign, which launched publically in 2014 with a goal of $3 million.
“When the co-chairs got together and decided to do this for the museum, they were very confident that we would reach $3 million,” said Executive Director Beth Whisman. “To know that they felt that way, and that those who support the museum in the community really got together and came on board, it makes a huge difference for us.”
Whisman explained the campaign was funded primarily through private donations.
“What does $3.36 million mean for us? It means a brand new permanent exhibit, a brand new exhibit on Abraham Lincoln, which we’ve never done before,” said Whisman. “A third educator so we can reach more in the community and meet that demand that just keeps growing every year.”
Campaign co-chair Carolyn Yockey said she’s “ecstatic” and “thrilled” by the campaign’s success.
“I had a feeling that we would do well. I did not expect to do as well as easily as we did,” Yockey said.
The History Makers honored during the gala were Jill Hutchison, Jack Porter, Gordon Ropp, and Father Ric Schneider.
