SPRINGFIELD – A major incentive to help those on low income food assistance is waiting on Gov. Bruce Rauner’s desk.
Illinois stewardship alliance policy associate Rebecca Osmand says doubling food benefits on the food purchases of fruits and vegetables at farmer’s markets will lead to healthier households.
“We are really leveraging a lot of potential to help folks on lower income budgets,” said Osmand. “Perhaps facing more challenges with health, obesity, and diabetes – we really want to take a preventative approach and help people have healthier options.”
Osmand says this program offers a preventative approach to chronic illnesses such as obesity and diabetes among our low-income residents, while directly benefiting local farmers and local economies.
