BLOOMINGTON – State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) is among those concerned about the future of the nuclear power plant in Clinton.
The plant’s future is uncertain after lawmakers failed to pass through legislation which would have provided financial aid. Brady has represented the Clinton plant for more than a decade.
“I’ve worked hard to try to, meeting after meeting, come up with some resolution that would keep that power plant open; that would help make sense out of that for Exelon,” said Brady. “Unfortunately, like a balanced budget, that fell on deaf ears in many cases.”
The Clinton plant produces about 20 percent of Illinois’ power. Parent company Exelon has said the site is not financially viable.
Brady added he does understand concerns with providing aid.
“Because anything we do to keep Clinton open will be viewed as a subsidy for a wealthy company, which is not right. It’s a long term energy source that I believe we will regret if it closes,” he said.
Brady said he’ll continue working to find solutions.
