NORMAL – The decision to resign as coach of the Heartland Community College baseball team was driven by finances for Nate Metzger.

Metzger sent his resignation to President Rob Widmer this week. He said after the school eliminated his position of athletic director earlier this year, he lost 80 percent of his salary.

“To stay and do the baseball thing just wasn’t going to be a feasible options in terms of taking care of (and) providing for my family,” he said.

Metzger was hired to start the athletic program in 2006. He explained he’s not sure where he’s headed next, but he does have some applications out.

“I think that there are going to be more coaching jobs that shake out,” said Metzger. “I’ve got a hand in scouting with the Braves since 1996 and that certainly is an option, or could be an option, as well.”

Metzger added prior to the decision to cut the athletic director position, he had no intentions of leaving and it’s difficult not being able to leave on his own terms.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
