GENEVA – The Peoria Chiefs have won four straight road games and are back over .500 for the first time since April 22 thanks to a 4-3 win over the Kane County Cougars on Tuesday night. The series-opening win gives the Chiefs nine wins in their last 11 games and a 19-18 record on the season.

The Chiefs came out swinging and running against Cougars starter Tyler Mack. Magneuris Sierra led off with a single to right and stole second as Edmundo Sosa struck out. Eli Alvarez singled to right to put the Chiefs on top 1-0 and Brian O’Keefe walked. After a double steal put two in scoring position, RJ Dennard singled to left for a 2-0 Chiefs lead. Chris Chinea blasted a two-run double off the left field wall for a 4-0 lead before Mark got out of the inning.

The Cougars got nothing against righty Sandy Alcantara through the first four innings as he allowed just two singles and struck out six of the first 11 outs he recorded. Alcantara allowed a leadoff single to Josh Anderson in the fifth and balked him to second base. Anderson stole third with two outs and scored when O’Keefe’s throw went into left field to cut the Chiefs lead to 4-1. Alcantara racked up two more strikeouts in the sixth inning and cruised through a 1-2-3 seventh.

Alcantara started the eighth inning and Luis Veras reached with a single to right and Quinnton Mack was hit by a pitch. Jordan DeLorenzo relieved Alcantara and both runners moved up one base on a sacrifice bunt. Veras scored on a groundout to cut the Chiefs lead to 4-2 and Mack came home when Galli Cribbs barely beat out an infield single to shortstop. DeLorenzo got Trevor Mitsui to ground into a fielders’ choice to end the inning with the Chiefs up 4-3.

Alcantara (4-2) earned the win as he allowed three runs, two earned on four hits over seven innings. He set a career high with 10 strikeouts while walking two and hitting one. DeLorenzo allowed a single over a shutout inning in his Chiefs debut. Luke Harrison nailed down his first save of the season with a strikeout in a hitless ninth inning.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
