NORMAL – Despite the pleas of parents, students, and players Heartland Community College is eliminating it’s athletic director position.
It’s part of a plan to eliminate 23 positions overall at the college.
Daniel Wassinger was one of more than 35 students who showed up in support of baseball coach Nate Metzger.
“So how did Coach Metzger get us to come here to his program?” asked Wassinger. “The answer is simple. We chose him. Behind every successful team is a successful coach.”
In an effort to combat lower enrollment and uncertain state funding the board of trustees voted unanimously to eliminate the positions. Metzger has been asked to stay on as baseball coach, but no longer be athletic director. Board President Gregg Chadwick.
“Speaking for myself I think Nate metzger is baseball coach who has done a great job with the baseball program,” said Chadwick
Chadwick said any changes to athletics at Heartland will be discussed in an open forum.
