BLOOMINGTON – It may be hard to believe, but many of us are only one paycheck away from homelessness.
That was the situation for Kerry Modenricker, who told WJBC’s Terry James that her mental health problems also led to being homeless in Bloomington for two years. She suffered from PTSD related to a trauma earlier in her life.
“It’s difficult,” Modenricker said. “If something dramatic happens or something triggers it, I have a hard time getting back to where I was.”
Modenricker explained her first night in a Salvation Army shelter.
“It was really strange,” said Modenricker. “You’re living with a lot of women who have their own issues and their own problems. Some of it is mental illness, some of it is people coming out of prison or jail who are trying to get back on their feet again.”
Modenricker also stayed at Home Sweet Home Ministries before getting back on her feet. She now gets help from Integrity Counseling in Bloomington. They provide counseling services to low income residents in the area.
