GENEVA- Goaltender Logan Halladay (Merrimack College) and the Bloomington Thunder went into Chicago and walked away with their 12th win in 13 games. Bloomington’s 1-0 win over the Steel is their third of the season against Chicago and gives Halladay three shutouts in his sophomore campaign. The Thunder (35-18-3-1) hold in the Eastern Conference’s second place, while Chicago (22-26-4-3) falls for the second game in a row.
Halladay won his 10th game of the season, making 30 saves. The Thunder goaltender has three shutouts to his credit and has won his last three starts. In the game, the Merrimack commit was all over the crease in the game, including stopping 13 shots in the opening period. After the Steel were held without a shot for over eight minutes, the goaltender helped them to stop two power play chances.
In the second, the Thunder rallied for the first goal of the game. Ethan Somoza (Bemidji State University) turned a rebound from Halladay up the ice. Developing into a 2-on-1 with Vlad Dzhioshvili (Cornell University), the Simi Valley, CA native fired a quick, hard wrist shot over the shoulder of Steel goaltender John Lethemon (Michigan State University). The shot was the only one of 33 shots on net to beat the future Spartan netminders.
Halladay continued into the second and third periods as he and the Thunder defense held the Steel off the board. Chicago was 0-for-4 on the power play thanks to their work in the defensive zone in the game. Chicago managed to stop the top rated power play in the league on the night as the Thunder came away 1-0 winners.
Thanks to the win, the Thunder kept pace with both the Dubuque Fighting Saints and Green Bay Gamblers who each won games on Friday night. Bloomington has two more games to play this season and are 12-1-0-0 over their recent winning streak. They are also 14-0-0-0 on the road this season in one-goal games.
The Thunder continue their road stretch to Madison on Friday night. Bloomington is 3-0-0-0 against the Capitols and will have a full week off from games before facing off from the Alliant Energy Center in Wisconsin.
