BLOOMINGTON – Voter turnout in McLean County for the March primary election hit almost 50 percent.
County Clerk Kathy Michael said she’s excited to see the turnout so high. She had been guessing turnout would be around 40 percent.
“I can honestly say 100 percent (we) had no major problems, no major complaints,” said Michael. “I’m not saying we’re perfect – minor glitches with equipment, nothing major.
“We were extremely, I’ll say, lucky because the odds are there’s going to be something break down.”
There was the issue of long lines at Illinois State University’s Bone Student Center and Michael’s office. She said the situation was exacerbated by the same-day voter registration law.
“I’m not a fan of this law, only because it was ill thought out. The intention might have been good, but as usual with a lot of things coming out of our legislation, it just was not thought out before being passed,” said Michael. “That’s my opinion.”
Michael encouraged voters to make sure and register ahead of time for November’s election. She said those long lines can be expected to be longer for the General Election.
