BLOOMINGTON – As flood waters have forced thousands of people in southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana to evacuate, a local food bank is stepping in to help.
Midwest Food Bank has sent three semi loads of food to the flood-damaged area near Beaumont, Texas. Operations Manager Mike Hoffman said the food bank needs about 30 volunteers on Thursday morning to help pack two more semi loads.
“There’s been historic flood down there,” Hoffman said. “It’s obviously bad.”
Midwest sends boxes of food to last a family of four for about four to five days. The packing will begin at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Midwest Food Bank warehouse at 1703 S. Veterans Parkway.
“We are trying to get them out as quickly as we can,” Hoffman said “They are actually going through semis of food in two days.”
Thousands of people in the south have been evacuated and hundreds of homes have been damaged by the floods.
