BLOOMINGTON – A man convicted of first degree murder in January has been sentenced to 55 years in prison.
Tracy Newson, 49, of Normal, was found guilty by a McLean County jury of shooting and killing Carlton Jordan in November 2014.
The prosecution argued Newson should be given a natural life sentence or 65 years in prison, citing Newson’s apparent indifference for human life during the incident. The defense argued for the minimum of 45 years.
Judge Robert Freitag said the sentence was necessary to deter this type of disregard for life. Freitag added he agrees with the jury which convicted Newson and that Newson is “unequivocally” responsible for Jordan’s death.
