NORMAL – The Normal Town Council will vote Monday night on new water rates in the town.
The two-percent rate increase would result in an average resident paying about 94 more cents per month. City Manager Mark Peterson said the rate increase was accounted for in the budget passed earlier this month.
“It’s a very modest increase and it’s designed to maintain the financial integrity of the water system,” said Peterson. “The water system is an enterprise fund, meaning it has to generate sufficient revenue to cover its expenses.”
Peterson explained the water fund has been maintaining itself, but in order to keep up with rising costs they feel the need to increase raters moderately now rather than wait and have to do a larger increase in the future.
He added the increase, if approved, is expected to generate about $183,000.
