BLOOMINGTON – The Bloomington City Council has approved the purchase of 807 N. Main St. for $1.4 million.
The building on site, which was formerly home to Mennonite Hospital, is currently being demolished.
City Manager David Hales explained the city does not plan to be the long term owner of the property.
“But to be a temporary holder,” said Hales. “And, once again, in working with our partner, Illinois Wesleyan University, hold this property until such time as we can be able to select the right developer who will come in and make a substantial investment.”
The official purchase will go through in the next few months.
“We believe that an appraisal will support that price,” said Economic Development coordinator Austin Grammer. “However, should it not, the city would have the option to either re-negotiate or walk away from the deal.”
Aldermen Kevin Lower and Jim Fruin voted against the deal.
