BLOOMINGTON – The Bloomington Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department will be completing prairie burning this week at Stonebridge Prairie, The Grove Park, Tipton Park and potentially White Oak Park.
The purpose of the prescribed burns is to restore the site with plant communities indigenous to the region. Prescribed fire is an important restoration, reclamation and enhancement tool for improving ecological conditions of important plant communities in the midwest. Ecologically, fire can inhibit the growth of low quality native invasive weeds while it stimulates the growth and production of high-quality native plants. While the blackened earth may appear unsightly for a few weeks after the burn, the site will green up quickly in the spring.
