BLOOMINGTON – McLean County Board District 2 candidate Mike Sumner, of Downs, said he’s the only one of the four write-in candidates for the position who has experience as a elected official.
Sumner told WJBC’s Terry James he has experience in analytical positions locally and nationally, which he believes would be advantageous for the board, especially with the current state budget impasse.
“I can tell you that in any given situation there are dozens, and dozens, and dozens of solutions,” said Sumner. “You can’t just look at the first two or three and stop; you’ve got to keep looking.”
Scott Murphy, of Downs, Garth Nicholas, of Heyworth and Diane Benjamin, of Ellsworth, are also running write-in campaigns for the seat, which was previously held by former Board Chairman Matt Sorenson – whose name will appear on the ballot. Sorenson resigned his position after being brought up on federal fraud charges.
Sumner said he supports the county’s efforts to improve mental health care. He added he would work to improved McLean County’s emergency response plan.
“What is our plan and how do we execute on a plan to respond the most efficient and affect way possible?” said Sumner. “I’ve spent 10 years in the catastrophe business. I’ve worked nationally in responding to these types of events.”
Sumner said it’s up to his fellow candidates and himself to educate voters on what to do on Election Day.
