BLOOMINGTON – A woman from Normal has been ordered to serve a 364-day jail sentence on weekends after admitting to driving under the influence of marijuana in a crash that seriously injured a passenger.
McLean County Judge Casey Costigan handed down the sentence on Thursday for Brittani Evans, 31, who crashed a sport utility vehicle on Interstate 55 near Towanda in September 2013. Ivan Smith, a front-seat passenger, suffered a traumatic brain injury and can no longer care for himself.
The judge issued the weekends-only sentence so Evans can care for her children, one on which suffered a stroke last year. Evans was was also ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution to Smith’s family.
