BLOOMINGTON – Two new members of the District 87 school board were introduced at Wednesday night’s meeting.
Brigette Beasley and Kiasha Henry were the candidates selected to fill the board positions left vacant by the resignations of John Dirks and Judith Webster. Henry has been involved with numerous community organizations including Heartland Headstart, the Children’s Discovery Museum and the Cultural Commission Board of Bloomington. She called joining the board “a great honor.”
“Bloomington has raised me,” Henry said. “It’s important to me to serve and apply my strengths and support to things that help the kids out. That’s just a big importance to me.”
Henry has worked as a US Postal Service Clerk since 1999 while being involved in several different community organizations. She said she’s entering the position of board member with some educational goals.
“Improving in the STEM Program and things like that, that’s what I’m all about,” said Henry. “I talk to my kids about it all the time, they’re probably a little tired of how much I talk about school, but I know the importance and value of it. I know what it’s like to not have it and not get that opportunity. I’m very invested and that’s what it’s all about.”
Beasley, who has worked in the insurance industry for more than 24 years and has been involved with the District as a parent, said she’s excited to join such a successful board.
“I am pleased with the things that they are doing, so I do want to be a part of that,” Beasley said. “I just want to learn as I get more engaged and bring different things to the board, but I think they’re doing a really great job. I definitely want to be a part of that and feel really blessed to be selected. I’m just ready to serve.”
Both appointments will last until the next regular school board election.
