BLOOMINGTON – Leave it to a financial planner to recommend a date-night discussion about money.
A Country Financial Security survey shows about seven in 10 want to begin the conversation about finances within the first few months of a relationship.
“If you haven’t discussed money with your valentine, consider starting the conversation sooner rather than later,” said Joe Buhrmann, manager of financial security at Country Financial. “Talking about finances as your relationship is budding can help quell financial quarrels down the road.”
Buhrmann said older Americans are far more concerned about a significant other’s debt than a millennial. He said younger adults seem to have grown more accustomed to the debt that comes with thing like college and buying a home.
The survey shows a majority of Americans want to know a partner’s credit score and income level before choosing a partner.
