BLOOMIGNTON – Green Top Grocery still needs to raise about $600,000 before it can begin construction of a co-op grocery store at 921 W. Washington St. in Bloomington.
Outreach Manager Katie Novak said the organization has already brought in $900,000 through its ownership campaign.
“The good news is, that’s something that no co-op has ever done before,” said Novak. “No start up co-op in the nation has raised that amount of money in that short of time.”
The fundraising campaign began in early fall. Novak explained the final funds need to be brought in by the end of the month or they could end up losing the construction site.
“We know it’s possible. We know that we have the support of our owners,” said Novak. “We’re over 1,000 (owners) now, which when we did the last phase of the campaign we were in the 700 range.”
