ST. LOUIS – Illinois State freshman guard Shakeela Fowler has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Fowler, a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, turned in a pair of strong performances over the weekend, as the Redbirds posted a 1-1 record, which included the team’s first road win of the 2015-16 season.
Fowler scored 15 points and dished out a career-high eight assists in the Redbirds’ 64-57 win at Evansville on Jan. 29, shooting 50 percent (5-for-10) from the floor and 100 percent (5-for-5) from the foul line. She also chipped in three rebounds. The eight assists were the most by a Redbird this season.
In a 76-71 loss at Southern Illinois on Jan. 31, Fowler scored another 15 points, to go along with five rebounds and three assists.
Over the two-game stretch, Fowler averaged 15.0 points, 5.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 45.8 percent (11-for-24) from the field and 100 percent (5-for-5) from the charity stripe.
Fowler and the Illinois State women’s basketball team (5-15, 3-6 MVC) are back in action Friday, when the Redbirds host Indiana State on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena, at 7 p.m., in Illinois State’s annual Play 4Kay cancer awareness game.
