BLOOMINGTON – A new law that takes effect in the new year allows school boards to privately discuss safety and security measures instead of having those discussions publicly.
“This was a concern that was actually raised by folks in my district,” State Rep. Tom Bennett (R-Gibson City), the bill’s sponsor said. “I was very glad to help do this.”
Bennett said the bill won’t shut the public out completely, but its up to the individual school boards to choose what is and isn’t shared with the public.
“I’m sure that (school boards) would be involved with the public in some way or another, but at the same time, they need to make sure those things are taken care of and tbe know exactly what they want to do moving forward,” Bennett said.
The bill passed unanimously in both the House and Senate.
