NORMAL – Heartland Community College has approved an 8.96 percent increase in its portion property tax levy.
The school’s Board of Trustees approved the measure Tuesday night by a unanimous vote.
President Rob Widmer added state budgetary issues are just one reason for the increase.
“The historical patterns at the state level, and our historical patterns to shift costs to the students, has been fairly dramatic over the last several years,” Widmer said.
Heartland has implemented tuition increases over the past several years.
“We’re among the highest tuitions in the state among community colleges,” said Widmer. “We’ve got some very difficult decisions to make in that regard as we approach the new fiscal year.”
The new levy means the owner of a $165,000 home will pay $15.86 more on next year’s tax bill.
