SPRINGFIELD – Gas prices are down across Illinois but there’s no way to predict where they’ll go from here.
That’s according to letters in response to Illinois’ attorney general and Chicago’s mayor from two oil producers and two oil industry marketers’ associations.
The September letters say producers and marketers can’t predict the price of oil at the pump and there are many factors from refinery shutdowns, to government intervention and the global price of crude oil all playing into what drive pump prices.
Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel sought answers to questions after a spike of gas prices over the summer. The letters were provided to Illinois News Network by the attorney general’s office.
The average price of a gallon of gas in Illinois Thursday was $2.07. Over the summer gas prices shot up to an average of nearly $3 per gallon.
Prices in Bloomington-Normal has dropped to as low as $1.74 per gallon.
