BLOOMINGTON – Batman, Superman and Spiderman spend most of their time fighting crime, but they’ll be on a different type of mission at Superheroes Day this Saturday.
The event will show children the benefits of eating healthy and will also provide recipes for healthy snacks. Julie Robinson with the West Bloomington Revitalization Project, a group sponsoring the event, said different types of vegetables and yogurts may be new to some children.
“We’re going to have dieticians and nutritionists there,” Robinson said. “Our event will be peanut free and gluten free, so the kids don’t have to worry about allergies and can feel comfortable trying the foods. It will be mostly fruits, vegetables, some yogurts and other things that they may have never tried before.”
Robinson said the heroes and local dieticians will stress just how easy it is to substitute junk food with healthy snacks.
“The national trend is to have kids just sitting on the couch and eating just any old thing,” said Robinson. “So we want to show that it’s just as easy to make a nutritious snack as it is to pick up a bag of chips.”
The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at the First Christian Church in Bloomington from 10 a.m. to noon.
