NORMAL – A group of community organizations, like Marcfirst, the Baby Fold and LifeCIL, have studied the issue of affordable housing over the last year in McLean County.

“The League of Women Voters charged our housing study group to look at housing in our community,” Marcfirst CEO Laura Furlong said. “When we started looking at it, we really came up with three issues that surfaced consistently: affordable housing in our community, supportive housing and permanency of housing.”

The League of Women Voters is putting its support behind finding a solution to the problem.

“Anything that comes up in the arena of affordable housing, we’re going to weigh it against what we’ve agreed on tonight,” League of Women Voters of McLean County director of program positions Maureen O’Keefe said. “If it fits our position, we can go out and take a variety of actions.”

O’Keefe said the task now is figuring out how to tackle the problems. Part of that solution involves coordinating efforts with community groups and helping those groups secure resources, like state and federal funding, to address any housing issues.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
