SPRINGFIELD – It looks as if come Thanksgiving Day, Illinois farm families can be thankful they are all having dinner together; the harvest should be done.
“This year has really been an excellent year for harvest,” said Mark Schleusener, the state statistician for the USDA’s crop reporting service. “It’s dry enough that they haven’t had to stop for rain delays very often. The crops themselves, the corn and the soybeans, are at a low moisture, so when they bring it to the elevator, they typically don’t have to pay (for drying). That’s happened some years, but not too much this year.”
Corn and soybeans are 85 percent harvested.
Schleusener said the state could use some rain, particularly in southern Illinois wheat fields.
