Chambers says state budget impasse has small impact on state’s attorney’s office

BLOOMINGTON – The McLean County State’s Attorney’s office isn’t feeling the pressure over the lack of a state budget as much as other places are.

State’s Attorney Jason Chambers told WJBC’s Dan Swaney the state budget impasse is forcing prosecutors to rethink some of the crimes they prosecute, though.

“It’s not really accurate for me to say we’re going to pick what we’re not going to prosecute, it’s what we’re going to pick to prosecute differently,” Chambers said. “Some things that are felonies we’ll have to try as misdemeanors, instead.”

Chambers said that won’t happen in cases of child exploitation, DUI’s or domestic abuse. But the budget impasse does have an impact on how authorities investigate white collar crimes.
