Ironmen win Third straight Chili Bowl; UHigh and CCHS win as BHS falls

By Nick McClintock

NORMAL- The annual Chili Bowl was a lot closer than the score showed, as the NCHS Ironmen defeated the Normal West Wildcats 35-14 at NCWHS Friday night.

Normal Community, now 3-0 on the 2015 season went up early, but for much of the game it was a one score game, as Normal West used an explosive offense to keep the game in check. NCHS, went ahead 28-14 midway through the third quarter with a Alec Bozarth touchdown and put in another score late in the fourth.

NCHS has now won three straight games against their Unit 5 rivals, and a 16-5 record overall in the Chili Bowl. West drops to 1-2 on the season.

Bloomington traveled up north a bit to take on LaSalle-Peru, and despite a strong offensive effort couldn’t hold back the Cavaliers and fell 44-34. Bloomington has yet to win a game in the season, and sit at 0-3.

UHigh had to rely not on it’s usual high powered offense, but an outstanding defensive effort to move to 2-1 on the year, beating Corn Belt Conference foe IVC 10-9 in Chillicothe.

All of the points in this contest were made in the first half, with UHigh going ahead early 10-0 before IVC got a FG. The Grey Ghosts then scored, but a blocked point after try to keep the Pioneers ahead for the duration of the game.

Central Catholic had no issues at all with Eureka, as the Saints beat the Hornets 45-0 at Bill Hundman Memorial Field.

The Hornets at least kept things somewhat competitive in the first half, but CCHS used a 28 point third quarter to force the running clock and spell a quick end to the contest. Central Catholic now moves to 2-1 on the year, mainly on the shoulders of a monster defense, who is only giving up just 7 points per game on the season.

The final Corn Belt Conference game of the night took place in Mahomet, as the Bulldogs look to be on the rebound. Mahomet-Seymour took down the Olympia Spartans 47-14.

The Spartans only mustered 150 yards of offense against the Bulldogs, as Olympia falls to 1-2 after the first third of the 2015 season

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
