BLOOMINGTON – The U.S. Cellular Coliseum operated at a loss during the first quarter of the 2016 fiscal year.

The Coliseum reported a loss of $252,465 during the first quarter. However, General Manager Bart Rogers said that’s less than the budgeted amount of $315,631.

“That loss is pretty much the same loss that incurs almost every first quarter in regards to how our fiscal year starts,” said Rogers. “It started in (one of) the deadest months of arena business, which is May. Our busy season starts in September through, usually, April or May. That loss was less, which is great.”

Rogers said Jehovah’s Witnesses conventions and concerts by Rod Stewart and Alan Jackson helped bring down the loss. It also added to the economic impact the Coliseum had, which was $4.2 million.

“Economic impact is what we strive to try and generate for the community,” he said.

Rogers said economic impact is where the true value of the venue can be measured.

“People coming in, dropping their money not only for the tickets, but on the back end for hotels, restaurants, gas to fill up, eating while on their way home,” said Rogers. “All those things are attributes that need to be looked upon when you’re doing an overall impact analysis on what the building truly means to the community.”

The Coliseum saw an attendance jump of 100 percent compared to the first quarter of last year. 66,555 patrons visited the venue, including 40,000 that traveled from outside McLean County.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
