One hospitalized in early morning fire in Normal

NORMAL – An early morning fire in north Normal sent one person to the hospital and damaged an apartment building.

The Normal Fire Department was called to the Orlando Northbrook Estates at 710 Orlando Ave. just after 1 a.m.

Firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the third floor of the three-story building. Crews got the blaze under control in about 20 minutes.The fire department took one person to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Fire officials say he was not a resident of the building but they believe he ran into the building to alert residents of the fire. His condition isn’t considered life threatening.

The apartment sustained moderate fire, smoke and water damage. While another apartment had minor damage. Costs are estimated at $30,0000.

The Red Cross of the Heartland was called to assist those who were displaced but fire officials didn’t know how many residents were displaced. It is unknown whether the occupants had renters insurance.
