NORMAL – A land swap between Illinois State University and the town of Normal is halfway complete.

The ISU Board of Trustees signed off on its part of the deal Friday. University spokesman Eric Jome said the university is giving up its property at 608 S. Main.

“In exchange, the university will be receiving some other property adjacent to campus that will allow us to expand some existing parking areas that we have and then also kind of look ahead to some strategic development of the campus in the future,” Jome said.

The properties ISU is receiving include property at the intersection of Beaufort St. and School St., a property on Sudduth Rd., the lot where Normal Fire Station #2 currently sits at 604 N. Adelaide and an apartment building at 404 W. Locust.

The Normal Town Council will vote on its part of the deal Aug. 3. The lot its receiving at 608 S. Main will likely be turned into a new fire station Normal City Manager Mark Peterson said the town plans to build.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
