BLOOMINGTON – There are people in the community without proper air conditioning and nobody is a big fan of this heat.

The Salvation Army of McLean County is continuing to help provide fans and hygiene products to help those in need during the summer.

“People need fans,” development director Angie Fulton said. “We still need people to donate. Donate money if you want to. We are still giving them out so if you need a fan you can stop by Monday through Thursday (at) 611 Washington Street. But definitely need the community to still be donating fans if they are able.”

Fans or cash donations to pay for fans can be dropped off at the Corps Community Center in Bloomington. Fulton said although the drive is going better than expected, there is still a need for more support.

“It’s going really well, we’ve been giving out a lot of fans,” Fulton said. “We’re already almost to 400 fans; we’re at 378. We typically give out 400 every season, so to be basically at what we usually give out with still almost two months or a month and a half to go is great.”

The Salvation Army started giving out fans June 29 and will continue through Aug. 28. Families that receive a fan must request one and provide a photo ID and a current piece of mail to prove they live in McLean County.

“If you know maybe an office group or maybe someone out there has a church group and might want to do a drive for us we would love it,” Fulton said. “Because people are needing them and we just don’t have enough right now to give to everyone that needs one, so we need help and support.”

The Salvation Army has already surpassed last year’s mark of 350 fans.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
