PEORIA – The Peoria Chiefs scored one run in the second inning and four pitchers made it stand up with a combined one-hit shutout as they took Wednesday night’s series opener over the Beloit Snappers 1-0.
The win, Peoria’s fifth in a row, improves the Chiefs to 12-8 in the second half and 45-43 overall with two games remaining on the current home stand.
Chiefs starter Jhonny Polanco walked Joe Bennie to start the game, and after back-to-back strikeouts Sandber Pimentel singled to put runners at first and second. Polanco struck out Max Kuhn to end the inning and Beloit would be held hitless the rest of the way, getting runners to second only in the fourth and ninth innings with walks.
The Chiefs scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the second against Snappers starter Heath Fillmyer. With one out Alex DeLeon walked and he scored from first on a double by Nick Thompson to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.
Polanco (2-3) pitched six shutout innings and allowed one hit and three walks, striking out a career-high eight. Cody Schumacher worked a scoreless seventh inning with one walk. Nick Lomascolo pitched a perfect eighth, striking out two. Kyle Grana earned his team-high 11th save with a perfect ninth inning, striking out one.
