DAVENPORT, IA – One day after scoring 12 runs on a season-high 17 hits, the Peoria Chiefs were held to three hits and shutout 2-0 Thursday night by the Quad Cities River Bandits. The loss drops the Chiefs to 3-5 in the second half and 36-40 on the season.
Darren Seferina led off the game with a single to left against Quad Cities starter Brock Dykxhoorn. Seferina stole second with two outs and moved to third as the throw sailed into center field. However he was left at third as Alex DeLeon flew out to center.
The game was still scoreless with two outs in the fourth when River Bandits All-Star Jamie Ritchie hit a flyball to right that just cleared the wall for a solo home run. The Bandits doubled their lead an inning later when Sean McMullen singled home Nick Tanielu with two outs. Matt Pearce got out of the inning after an error with Bandits runners left on the corners in a 2-0 game.
Dykxhoorn retired 15 Chiefs in a row after the Seferina single. Andrew Sohn ended that stretch with a leadoff single in the sixth and he moved to second on a groundout. Dykxhoorn kept the Chiefs off the board by getting a flyout and a strikeout to end the inning.
Pearce (3-9) allowed two runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings as he struck out four in the quality start loss. Kyle Grana retired all four batters he faced on groundouts.
