BLOOMINGTON – The Salvation Army of Bloomington is in need of more fans to give away this summer after a busy first day of its giveaway.

“Yesterday, we saw a lot of families with young children, a lot of seniors, many with medical conditions,” Salvation Army spokesperson Angie Fulton said. “A lot of them said they didn’t have any air conditioning or any other way to keep themselves cool and keep their houses cool.”

146 fans were given out during the first day of The Salvation Army’s annual summer fan giveaway. Fulton said the organization typically gives out between 300-400 fans every summer.

The Salvation Army is accepting fans or monetary donations through Aug. 28, the last day of the fan giveaway. You can either drop off or mail in the donation to the organization’s headquarters at 611 W. Washington St.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
