BLOOMINGTON – Young golfers from 13 states will converge on Bloomington-Normal for the Youth Classic presented by Country Financial.

Matt Hawkins with the Bloomington-Normal Sports Commission told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin 383 golfers ages three to 22 to compete at five local courses; The Den at Fox Creek, Prairie Vista, the Links at Ireland Grove, Ironwood and the Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University.

“(The courses) are difficult but fair, not as difficult as maybe not Chambers Bay,” Hawkins quipped. “I think that’s what helps us get a lot of these kids back is our quality courses and the hospitality there too.”

The 14th annual Classic has attracted golfers from all over the world. This year there’s a female golfer from South Africa.

The Classic also needs volunteers including shuttle drivers and observers which will be assigned to a foursome and assist with keeping score.

The tournament includes five golfers who placed in the top 10 in their divisions at the Illinois High School Association state tournament last fall; Madison Hill of Pekin, Morgan Savage of Rochester, Caitlin Sims of Athens, Tyler Wall of Nashville and Hunter Nesselroad of Wataga.

Practice rounds and a skills competition will be on Monday. The tournament runs Tuesday and Wednesday.

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
