SPRINGFIELD – Four budget bills are on Gov. Bruce Rauner’s desk awaiting his signature, but it’s likely he won’t approve.
A spokesperson for Illinois Senate President John Cullerton confirms that the Senate and House each sent the Governor two bills and more are expected to be sent next week. A spokesperson for House Speaker Michael Madigan said that only a few of the spending measures were sent to the governor to “give the governor plenty of time to calm down and reflect.”
The measures sent to Rauner range from capital and road fund re-appropriations, Monetary Award Program grants, State Board of Education grants and money for State University Retirement System and Civil Service System. The governor’s office says he remains committed to working with legislators to enact reforms to produce a balanced budget but says the governor has made clear for weeks that the budget passed is unbalanced and unacceptable.
Rauner’s office says there’s no reason a deal, including structural reforms and a balanced budget, can’t be reached before July 1.
