NORMAL – The Normal Town Council has approved a change to the South College Village Planned Unit Development, which was originally created in 2007 to provide housing and services for the elderly.
The council voted 5-1 Monday night to remove a 1.5 acre area in the southwest corner of the PUD to allow a Dollar General to be built. Councilwoman Kathleen Lorenz cast the lone “no” vote.
“I was concerned about the fact that it was a parcel of the PUD, the Planned Unit Development, that was being removed from the PUD,” said Lorenz. “That, to me, felt a little reactionary and deviating from what I think a Planned Unit Development should be.”
City Manager Mark Peterson said this isn’t what the town first envisioned for the area, but believed this is a good move.
“For the residents of the assisted living facility, my guess is they’ll find this to be a nice option because they can access it through a pedestrian way without having to cross the street,” Peterson said.
Also on Monday, the council approved an intergovernmental agreement with Bloomington for the regulation of transportation networks, such as Uber.
