BLOOMINGTON – The Boys & Girls Club of Bloomington-Normal is the celebrating successful completion of its annual Great Futures campaign.

The organization raised $111,380. That beat the original goal of $75,000.

“We’re so thankful for the support and generosity of our community,” said Boys & Girls Club CEO Grant Anderson. “This really allows us to sustain the growth in membership and average daily attendance we’ve experienced over the past year, and enables us to continue to serve more youth more often with more impact.”

The money raised represents a 38 percent increase of the 2014 campaign, which brought in $80,458. Anderson explained what he believed led to this year’s success.

“The leadership and commitment of our volunteers,” said Anderson. “We have more people involved this year and it seems like the awareness of the Boys & Girls Club is growing throughout the community. When people become aware of what we do, and the impact it has on our kids, they want to invest in it.”

Anderson said the funding goes directly to the programs the club runs.

The 2015 campaign was led by Integrity Technology Solutions CEO and President Mary Bennett Henrichs and retired 11th Judicial Circuit Judge John P. Freese.

It’s not too late to donate to the Boys & Girls Club. Anyone interested can send a check made out to Boys & Girls Club to 1615 W. Illinois St,. Bloomington or visit bgcb-n.org.

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
