BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington Police have arrested a man accused of driving the wrong way down Washington Street at a high rate of speed while drunk this morning.
Michael Jeffers, 43, is also accused of nearly striking a police detective, actually striking another vehicle and sending it into a tree near Washington School. The speed limit was 30 miles per hour. Police estimate the man was going 80 miles per hour.
“The suspect’s vehicle did not stop after causing this accident, but continued westbound on Washington Street,” said Bloomington Police spokesperson Sarah Mayer. “The suspect vehicle then struck a fire hydrant and came to a rest on Washington Street between State Street and Perrin Avenue.”
Mayer said Jeffers was arrested by detectives after he exited the vehicle. Two people were injured and Mayer said their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. Jeffers was arrested on charges of Aggravated DUI , Reckless Driving, Hit and Run, Driving While License Revoked, and he was issued several traffic citations.
