PEORIA – The Peoria Chiefs snapped a six-game losing streak with a 7-1 win over the Beloit Snappers to open a six-game homestand Tuesday night. The win improves the Chiefs to 9-10 on the season with two games left against Beloit in the series.
The Snappers got the scoring started in the top of the fifth against Luis Perdomo. Brett Vertigan reached base on a one-out walk, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Yairo Munoz for the 1-0 lead.
The Chiefs tied the game at 1-1 in their half of the fifth when Blake Drake blasted a one-out homer off starter Heath Fillmyer to left field. The homer was Drake’s first of the year and gave him his fourth RBI of the season.
Peoria pulled ahead with six runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-1 lead. Danny Diekroeger led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a single from Collin Radack. Both men advanced 90 feet on a passed ball by Argenis Raga. Justin Ringo singled to score Diekroeger and move Radack to third. Alex DeLeon singled to drive in Radack and move Ringo to second.
Mike Fagan came in to relieve Fillmyer and walked Steve Bean to load the bases. Drake doubled to right-center to bring Ringo and DeLeon home, and Bean scored on an error to make it 6-1. Darren Seferina and Magneuris Sierra struck out back-to-back but Sierra reached base on a wild pitch to put runners and the corners with one out. Oscar Mercado was the ninth batter in the inning and he doubled to drive in Drake and make the score 7-1.
Perdomo (1-0) allowed one run on five hits over six innings. He walked three and struck out three while earning the victory. Zach Loraine allowed one hit in two shutout innings with two strikeouts and no walks. Kyle Grana worked a scoreless ninth, allowing one hit and striking out one.
