SPRINGFIELD – An Illinois legislator is calling for tougher penalties for drivers that cause deadly crashes while using cellphones.

State Rep. Robert Martwick wants offenders of this crime to serve up to 20 months in prison. The Norridge Democrat says the proposed measure would send the message that driving while using a cellphone or texting is as dangerous as driving under the influence.

Martwick says DUI prosecutions decreased after penalties were stiffened.
