COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Behind her arm and her bat, Illinois State junior Regan Romshek led the Redbird softball team to a 4-1 victory over Boston University Sunday in College Station, Texas. The win closed out a five-game slate at Texas A&M in which ISU went 2-3.
Things started poorly for the Redbirds as they loaded the bases in the top of the first inning, but failed to score. Boston came back with three hits and a run in the bottom of the frame to take an early 1-0 lead.
ISU's offense went scoreless for the first three innings, but in the fourth inning the bats awoke. Romshek led off the inning with a solo home run to left field that tied the game. Later in the inning, Kara Repp laid down a perfect squeeze bunt that scored Lindsey Greene to give ISU the lead.
In the fifth, Romshek was at it again. After Stephanie Gallant hit her second hit of the ballgame, Romshek launched a two-run homer to left that fit just inside the left field foul pole.
The three-run cushion was more than enough for Romshek, who completely shut down Boston after the first inning. Only one Terrier batter reached after the first inning and Romshek did not allow another hit in the ballgame.
The junior picked up her seventh win of the season after pitching the full seven innings, giving up three hits, a run and striking out three. She did not walk a batter.
At the plate, Romshek finished 3-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Gallant went 3-3 with a run and was on base four times. ISU tallied nine hits as a team.
The Redbirds advanced to 8-12 on the season and went 2-3 for the fourth-consecutive weekend. ISU will be in action Friday-Sunday at Louisville where they will play five games.
