Budget proposal threatens ag education funding

DOWNS – Illinois schools with agriculture education and FFA programs might be wishing Gov. Bruce Rauner had paid more attention to National FFA Week activities this week.

As area chapters are celebrating career opportunities and leadership training in agriculture, the governor’s budget proposal would zero out the agricultural education line item, which provides $1.8 million annually to support these kinds of programs.

“We need to invest our money in the future of this state, and it may sound cliché, but that’s investing in young people. And if we can do that in a way that challenges them, provides them opportunity to find their passions, and encourages them to continue on in school and to become productive members of society that are excited about what they are doing, it seems to me where that can naturally fit,” said Dr. David Mouser, superintendent of Tri-Valley Schools.

Mouser is a former Illinois FFA State President who credits the organization with many of the leadership skills he uses in making decisions today. He said the return on investment when it comes to this funding is significant.

“Some of the numbers that are kicked out even from the students that have the Supervised Agriculture Experience Programs – these students are providing internships, they’re putting money back into their local economies, they’re putting money back into the state. And those dollar figures can be researched and figured out, but it’s in the tens of thousands of dollars that these kids are generating because of the experience they’ve had in FFA, not to mention down the road what these kids are able to do for their home states and their communities and that kind of thing,” said Mouser.

Mouser said he is encouraged by proposed general state aid increases and efforts like Vision 2020, but he hopes agriculture education funding can also be maintained.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
