Open house will feature 4-H robotics team

By Carrie Muehling

NORMAL – Many 4-H members are cracking open project books and taking part in activities that will prepare them for this summer’s county fair and other events.

Several 4-H robotics teams in the county are getting ready for spring competitions, including Team MetalCow. That group has built a robot they’ll use in competition in March in Little Rock, Ark. They’ll share this year’s robot and how they built it with the public on Saturday, Feb. 14 during an open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Rader Family Farms.

“If they are interested or if their children or grandchildren or nieces or nephews might be interested in robotics at any age in 4-H, this is one of those chances to check it out,” said Carolyn Hansen, 4-H youth development educator with the University of Illinois Extension in McLean County.

Hansen said robotics has really taken off as a project, but young people can choose almost any area to pursue as a part of the 4-H experience. Area clubs can still sign up new members until Apr. 15.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
