SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner says the prison system in Illinois needs serious attention. It has 150 percent more inmates than it was designed to house, which Rauner says is a serious threat to inmate and staff safety. And, he says about 50 percent of the people who leave prison end up committing another crime and getting locked up again. Rauner is forming a commission, called the Illinois State Commission on Criminal Justice and Sentencing Reform, that will take a closer look at sentencing structures and look for ways to improve the system as a whole.
