SPRINGFIELD – A day after Democrats laughed openly at the governor’s minimum-wage proposal – the one giving workers a raise from today’s $8.25 an hour to $10 in 2022 – the Illinois Senate passed their own increase, which is less gradual.
“As long as (workers) are getting up every day trying to do best for their families, we should not keep them heavily reliant on government assistance,” said the sponsor, State Sen. Kimberly Lightford (D-Maywood). “And that’s exactly what we’re doing by finding every excuse we can to not pay them fair and livable wages.”
An opponent, State Sen. Kyle McCarter (R-Lebanon), said Lightford should take Republicans – including Rauner – at their word and let the process play out more slowly. “My concern is that we don’t really help the people we say we’re trying to help,” he said. “This will have an impact on small businesses.”
