SPRINGFIELD – The number of people approved to use marijuana for medicinal purposes is up, but still not to the point where it can sustain growing and selling businesses.
Illinois has now approved about 1,000 applications to use medical pot, up from 650 about a month ago. About 14,000 people have begun the application process, and about 2,100 have submitted at least part of the necessary paperwork.
Supporters of medicinal pot had estimated 30,000 customers during the first year, 50,000 by the second year and an eventual customer base in the hundreds of thousands.
