SPRINGFIELD – To some people, the police are the bad guys. But when an officer kills someone in the course of duty, an independent review would follow, under a bill sponsored by State Rep. Christian Mitchell (D-Chicago).
“When there is an officer-involved death, to make sure there is transparency, accountability, (and) closure,” Mitchell said, “there would be an independent investigation, and, assuming there was a finding that there was no need for further prosecution (of the officer), a report would be released.”
Mitchell said the bill is based on one which passed in Wisconsin and would have the report, probably through the state's attorney's office, released once it’s determined there would be no charges against the police.
